Facebook's new applications
Friday, May 25, 2007 at 12:00PM Facebook's new applications platform (basically, what many of us consider "widgets") has opened up the network, particularly in terms of functionality. The applications went live last night. I took a look around and added a Twitter app to my profile. Businesses such as BlueNile and Forbes are offering apps. Most of the apps currently available are for other online social networks. The good news is the applications platform presents an opportunity for businesses and organizations to get some exposure in the Facebook community.
The aim for Facebook is to increase usage and traffic, which in turn will generate ad revenue for the company. Facebook offers a slick interface and clean design. It was originally available only to college students, who remain the community's base. Facebook opened up to the general Internet population back in September. Facebook's new features further open up the network to a more diverse audience. These apps are another step to catching up to the usage ranks of MySpace. Facebook can be an important communications channel, especially as it is moves up the adoption curve and offers exposure to other demographics.
